There are three 30 minute workshops
Reshaping Economics with 400G ZR+. (Jonathan Homa, 30 minutes)
Optical transport networks will be built on 400G lanes to transport 100GbE and growing 400GbE traffic. This session discusses how new pluggables that implement 400G ZR+ technologies will reduce reliance on embedded proprietary transceivers, and transform the economics for building optical highways.
Open Optical & Shared Spectrum. (Ronen Cohen, 30 minutes)
This session explains how build optical networks using fully and partially disaggregated approaches, and the API standards needed to fulfill each approach. It then goes on to discuss how optical line systems are evolving from simple alien wavelengths, to shared spectrum capabilities like spectral pipes and spectrum sliced virtual optical networks.
Enhanced QoS Techniques. (Ivan Bykov, 35 minutes)
Many NRENs based on an MPLS-TP packet backbone are considering moving to a more sophisticated IP-MPLS network. This session explains the pros and cons of such a move, and specifically how to avoid QoS pitfalls by implementing Hierarchical QoS.

We will discuss the technologies paving the road of All Optical Networking.
AWS (Amazon Web Services) | 12:00 – 14:00 CEST
Amazon’s culture of innovation
12:00 Education and research institutions often ask us, “How does Amazon innovate?” In this session, you will learn about the four pillars that help us innovate on behalf of our customers: culture, mechanisms, architecture, and organization. We will also encourage you to think about how your own organisation can use these pillars to innovate to meet the needs of staff and students.
Speaker: Daniel Bacelic, Education Partner Lead, Amazon Web Service
13.00 Andy Powell: How being an AWS partner helps Jisc to innovate
13.10 Simon Farr: Virtual Classroom – a new approach to lecture delivery on AWS

NOKIA | 12:00 – 14:00 CEST
Making waves with 5th generation super-coherent optics ( 12:00 – 13:00 CEST)
Speaker: Alberto Bellato, Business Development Manager, Europe & MEA Regional Business Center, Optical Networks Division Nokia
As research networks continue to push the limits of capacity and agility, industry partners continue to deliver innovations in response. Nokia’s 5th generation super-coherent optical processors, Photonic Service Engine 5 (PSE-5), are at the heart of the latest optical networking generation, enabling 400G everywhere.
In this TNC’21 workshop, Nokia engineers will describe recent advances in super-coherent optics, silicon photonics and device packaging; all innovations that enable a range of applications including 400ZR pluggables through high performance modules for long haul networks. Attend this session and learn how:
• Super-coherent processors continue to evolve, delivering span-optimized performance remarkably close to the Shannon limit
• Silicon photonics are now real factor in commercial development of optical transmission systems
• A range of devices enable ultra-high capacity deployment in any practical network scenario: across the campus or across the globe
Driving innovation outside-in through open collaboration: WaveHub ( 13:00 – 14:00 CEST)
Speaker: Massimo Meloni, Business Management Leader, Europe & MEA Regional Business Center, Optical Networks Division Nokia
Nokia believes in the potential of openness and collaboration to drive innovation and create new value across the telecom industry with open interfaces, enabling multi-vendor interoperability, simplified network operations, analytics and agile service introduction. Nokia’s WaveHub program was therefore created to connect with a global ecosystem of innovators to develop new ways to unlock the value in optical networks. This open market oriented ecosystem brings together the following ecosystem players with the aim of translating innovative ideas into commercially viable products.
• Independent software and hardware vendors, including startups
• Research institutions and academia
• System integration partners
• Technology partners
• Communication service providers, network operators and enterprises
Using the Open Ecosystem Network Platform, or OpEN, a purpose-built collaboration environment, WaveHub encourages an agile, iterative, rapid prototype driven, fail-fast experimentation process.
Our speaker Massimo Meloni will introduce you to WaveHub and guide you through the different phases of the co-creation process from exploration, idea selection, concept creation and development, market promotion, product delivery through to monetization.
Attendees of this session will learn:
• how to become more successful by leveraging innovations from a diverse ecosystem
• ways to remove barriers to collaboration to make innovating easier
• about Nokia’s WaveHub Ecosystem program and how they can benefit from the program
• how to access Nokia’s Optical Network products for rapid experimentation and research purposes
